Database/Systems administrator
As databases grow and the security and integrity of information becomes ever-more crucial, so too does the need for skilled database and systems administrators.
Database administrators design, write and take care of computer database systems so that the right person can get the right information at the right time. They work with database software to find ways to store, organise and manage data. They identify user needs, set up computer databases and test systems ensuring that they perform as they should. Data integrity, backup, security and troubleshooting are critical parts of the database administrator's job and these issues are becoming increasingly important. A database administrator should have knowledge and some experience of database management systems such as Oracle, IBM DB2 or MySQL and query languages such as SQL, PL/SQL.
Responsibilities
- Installation, configuration and upgrading of Database server software and related products.
- Evaluate Database features and Database related products.
- Establish and maintain sound backup and recovery policies and procedures.
- Take care of the Database design and implementation.
- Implement and maintain database security (create and maintain users and roles, assign privileges).
- Database tuning and performance monitoring.
- Application tuning and performance monitoring.
- Setup and maintain documentation and standards.
- Plan growth and changes (capacity planning).
- Work as part of a team and provide 24/7 support when required.
- Do general technical troubleshooting and give cons.
- Database recovery
History of DBMS
Data is a collection of facts and figures. The data collection was increasing day to day and they needed to be stored in a device or a software which is safer.
Charles Bachman was the first person to develop the Integrated Data Store (IDS) which was based on network data model for which he was inaugurated with the Turing Award (The most prestigious award which is equivalent to Nobel prize in the field of Computer Science.). It was developed in early 1960’s.
In the late 1960’s, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) developed the Integrated Management Systems which is the standard database system used till date in many places. It was developed based on the hierarchical database model. It was during the year 1970 that the relational database model was developed by Edgar Codd. Many of the database models we use today are relational based. It was considered the standardized database model from then.
The relational model was still in use by many people in the market.Later during the same decade (1980’s), IBM developed the Structured Query Language (SQL) as a part of R project. It was declared as a standard language for the queries by ISO and ANSI. The Transaction Management Systems for processing transactions was also developed by James Gray for which he was felicitated the Turing Award.
10 Top Database Certifications
1. Microsoft DP-300 Exam: Administering Relational Databases On Microsoft Azure
Traditionally, the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification — a baseline accreditation designed to teach the fundamentals of database knowledge — was considered one go-to option for professionals new to the industry.
However, Microsoft began phasing out the MTA in 2021. In June 2022, the certification exam will no longer be available.
Skills Acquired
The content of the DP-300 exam does not map one-to-one with what was in the MTA exam. However, this certification will provide a familiarity with database administration and the Azure platform.
2. Microsoft DP-900 Exam: Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals
The Microsoft DP-900 exam certification is ideal for database administrators or students who want accreditation focused more on the fundamentals than the DP-300 exam.
Skills Acquired
The DP-900 exam provides fundamental database administration knowledge using the Azure system as a reference point.
3. MongoDB Database Administrator
MongoDB is often the go-to database choice for teams that need a NoSQL or non-relational database.
It’s not the most commonly used database, but it’s employed frequently enough that database administrators may want a MongoDB certification at some point in their career.
MongoDB offers two platform-specific certifications, MongoDB Developer and MongoDB Database Administrator, which will be the most relevant for database professionals.
Skills Acquired
The Database Administrator course covers fundamentals, including topics related to server and database administration as well as basic JavaScript, system programming, and software development.
4. Oracle Database Administrator Certified Associate
Oracle offers a handful of database certifications relevant to administration and the Oracle Database management system.
The Oracle Database Administrator Certified Associate, which is based on the version of Oracle Database people currently use (12c, 12cR2 OCP, or 11g), will be the best available option. A 10g version of the certification is also available.
Skills Acquired
These certifications are slightly different versions that teach primarily the same course content—database fundamentals and administration skills. However, certain elements are adapted based on the chosen Oracle Database version.
5. Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional
As a follow-up accreditation, Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional demonstrates a deeper understanding of the Oracle Database system for DBAs with associate certification.
Skills Acquired
This course builds on knowledge from the associate certification, covering topics relevant to cloud computing. Several professional versions are available for different Oracle Database releases.
6. EnterpriseDB’s Postgres Certification Program
Since Postgres is open source, there are no certificates available directly from the PostgreSQL development team. If you want a Postgres certificate, your only option will be a third-party certification program offered by EnterpriseDB.
Skills Acquired
The Postgres program includes an associate and professional certification. The associate course covers the basics of database administration as well as the specifics of working with Postgres.
7. IBM Certified Database Administrator, Db2
The IBM Certified Database Administrator accreditation provides a combination of general knowledge and practical information about the IBM Db2 family of products.
Skills Acquired
The certification course covers database design and implementation, recovery, security and migration, and distributed access.
8. SAP Certified Application Associate, Reporting, Modeling, And Data Acquisition With SAP BW/4HANA 2.X
Certification from SAP can be valuable for professionals working with SAP HANA. The company offers a wide variety of credentials, but only two are directly relevant to SAP HANA.
Skills Acquired
The certification course covers modeling, data acquisition, and query design with SAP HANA.
9. Teradata Vantage Administrator Exam
Do you want to learn more about Teradata Vantage and its features, like its advanced SQL engine? Teradata offers a course and exam for DBAs that will teach you more about Vantage and measure your knowledge.
Skills Acquired
